The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this TLD is that all websites that use it have to comply with special regulations. In other words, all dot MOBI websites need to be developed to be opened faultlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The requirements have provoked some concerns given the fact that the universal extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be created in such a way as to be opened by the majority of browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
